Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
